To provide on-the-job training in fire prevention functions to Fire Science students and/or Fire Academy graduates.The program will prepare participants to full current and future employment needs in the Fire Service and private industry.
Program Description
Members of the program will be volunteer workers only and shall not be deemed to be employees of the City of Orange or of the Fire Department for any purpose other than to serve gratuitously.Members will be provided on uniform and proper identification.
Description of Duties
To assist Fire Inspectors with on-site inspections; assist with investigation of complaints relating to fire hazard conditions; assist in computer entry and researching data; and other code enforcement duties assigned, depending upon each individual’s capabilities.Participants will be expected to volunteer eight (8) hours a week on a scheduled basis.
Why Participate?
Local fire departments are increasing personnel due to expansion or retirements.Modern fire departments devote as much as 50% of their time to fire prevention duties, and private industry is interested in people knowledgeable in fire prevention.Participants that apply themselves in the program will enhance their education and ability to find employment.Employment in the fire service is expected to increase about as fast as the average of all occupations to meet the growing need for fire protection.
What are the prerequisites?
In order to be considered for the program, you must be 18 years of age; currently enrolled in Fire Science courses and/or a graduate of a recognized Fire Academy; willing to work eight (8) hours a week on a scheduled basis; possess a valid California driver’s license and have a good driving record.A ten-year DMV printout must be submitted with your application.

The application may be returned at any time with a resume not to exceed two (2) pages. Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in an interview with an oral board.Ten participants will be selected for the program.
