The Youth Services Bureau (YSB) concentrates on enforcing laws relative to juveniles and administering programs geared toward preventing and controlling juvenile delinquency and victimzation. This includes pro-active efforts to reduce truancy, shoplifting, and sexual abuse and teen dating violence.
The Youth Services Bureau investigates all crimes where the victim or suspect is under 18 years of age. This includes physical and sexual assaults, theft, robbery, possession of weapons, drugs, truancy, shoplifting, vandalism, trespassing, and other miscellaneous crimes. Runaways and missing children cases are also handled by Youth Services.
Some investigations take long periods of time to complete while others can be resolved in a matter of hours. First time offenders are generally given the opportunity for diversion counseling and education. All other cases are referred to the Probation Department or District Attorney's Office.
Youth Services investigators work closely with other investigators, police departments, and organizations such as the Orange Unified School District, County of Orange Social Services, Child Abuse Registry, and the Orange County Child Abuse Services Team.
All cases of suspected child abuse and reported to the Child Abuse Registry and investigated by the appropriate law enforcement and social services agencies.
