At what point in the application or hiring process does the City contact my current and/or past employers and my reference(s)?
Employers and references will be contacted once you have received a conditional job offer and are scheduled for a comprehensive background check.
Can I volunteer for the City?
Yes. Volunteer opportunities are available and assignments and department location vary. Please call (714) 744-7255 for more information.
Do all positions require a written or practical exam?
No. Exams vary for each position.
Do volunteers require backgrounds?
Yes. All volunteers must pass a drug screening and be live scanned.
Do you have a summer job program?
Yes. Typically summer hiring begins in late January or February. We recommend filling out a job interest card so that you may be notified when the summer positions are available.
I don’t have access to a computer to apply for a job online. What should I do?
You can visit any public library and utilize their computers. You must have an active email address in order to set up your account and apply online.
I have interviewed for a position and received a notification that I have been placed in a "Band". What does this mean?
The City of Orange follows the rules of the Band. Typically candidates in Band I are interviewed by the department seeking to fill the vacancy and a selection is made. If no selection is made from Band I, they may proceed to Band II and so forth. Candidates on all Bands are kept on an eligibility list that is good for one year.
What are the steps of the selection process?
The steps of the selection process vary depending upon the position. Once your application passes the application screening, you will be invited by email for an oral interview. Application screening and an oral interview may be all that is required. On the other hand, you may be required to pass a written exam; or a performance test may be required for a position requiring certain skills.
What are your business hours?
We are open Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and alternating Fridays from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
What if I am not selected or interviewed for a position I applied for?
Our objective is to hire the best person for the job, so competition is important. If you are placed in a Band and are not successful in getting a job immediately, your name will remain on the eligibility list for consideration for any future vacancies that occur until the list expires. If you are not interviewed or hired during that time period, you must wait for another recruitment and re-apply for that position. It is a good idea to keep your original notifications from the Human Resources Department so you will know what eligibility lists you are on.
What if I can’t attend a scheduled exam or interview?
If you are unable to attend your exam or interview you must contact the Human Resources Department at (714) 744-7255. A representative will let you know if your exam or interview can or cannot be rescheduled.
What is an Eligibility List?
An Eligibility List is a list that is established after a recruitment has been conducted. The list contains those applicants who meet the minimum qualifications for a specific position and have successfully completed the selection process. Usually, eligibility lists expire one year from the date the position closes; however, the Human Resources Department reserves the right to extend an eligibility list or expire the list early.
What should I do if I am called for an oral interview?
Once your application passes the application screening, you will be invited by email for an oral interview.
Be sure that you know the following: • Time and place of your interview • Phone number (important if you can't make it or an emergency occurs) • Name of person who contacted you • Time allotted for your interview • The job for which you are being considered If you need to request reasonable accommodation for your interview, contact the Human Resources Department at (714) 744-7255 prior to your interview date.
