Elections
The City Clerk serves as the local elections official and coordinates with the County of Orange in conducting municipal elections. The City of Orange consolidates its regular general municipal elections with statewide elections held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of each even-numbered year to fill expired City Council terms and conducts elections in accordance with the California Elections Code and local regulations.
The next General Municipal Election will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
The election will be for:
- Mayor
- Three (3) Councilmember District seats (Districts 2, 3, and 5)
- City Clerk
- City Treasurer

2024 Qualified Candidates
Nomination Period for Write-In Candidates
September 9-October 22, 2024
The filing period for those interested in running for an eligible office in the November 5, 2024, election as a write-in candidate begins on Monday, September 9 and ends at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22. Nomination papers for write-in candidates will be made available by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, please contact the City Clerk's Office at (714) 744-5500.
Persons who did not file a Declaration of Candidacy and fulfill their nomination requirements to place their name on the ballot may run for office as a write-in candidate. Write-in votes will be counted and certified in the Statement of Vote only for qualified write-in candidates who file the required forms with the City Clerk no later than 14 days prior to Election Day.
Candidates for Districts, 2, 3, and 5 must be registered to vote in their district at the time nomination papers are issued. Candidates for Mayor, City Clerk, and City Treasurer must be registered voters in the City of Orange.
Write-in candidates are subject to the same requirements as other candidates with regard to disclosure of economic interests and campaign disclosure (Gov. Code Section 82007; Elections Code Section 305).
Notice of Public Examination Period for the Candidate Statements of Qualification and Ballot Designations
August 12-19*, 2024
The public may examine all candidate statements and ballot designations submitted for the official Voter Information Guide. Candidate statements and ballot designations are available for review during normal business hours at the Office of the City Clerk located at 300 E. Chapman Avenue, Orange. A fee for copies may be charged.
*If the filing period is extended pursuant to Elections Code Section 10225, the public examination period for that office is August 15-26.
Notice of Extension of Candidate Nomination Period
August 12-14, 2024
The candidate filing period has closed for the office of City Treasurer.
Pursuant to California Elections Code Section 10225, the nomination period for the office of City Treasurer has been extended to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2024. To obtain and file nomination papers for Treasurer, candidates must make an appointment to meet with the City Clerk by registering through the online election portal.
Candidate Filing Period
July 15 - August 9*, 2024
The nomination period for candidates for all City Council districts, Mayor, and City Clerk has closed. The filing period for write-in candidates is September 9 - October 22, 2024.
The nomination period begins on Monday, July 15, 2024, and closes on August 9, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. Candidates for Districts 2, 3, and 5 must be registered to vote in their district at the time nomination papers are issued. Candidates for Mayor, City Clerk, and City Treasurer must be registered voters in the City of Orange. Candidates must make appointments to meet with the City Clerk to pull and file nomination papers by registering through the online election portal.
Candidates must file all nomination paperwork and fees with the City Clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. on August 9, 2024.
*If an eligible incumbent for any seat does not file nomination papers by the deadline, the nomination period for that seat will be extended to August 14, 2024, at 5:00 p.m.

2024 Unofficial Candidate List
The Prospective Candidate List contains those candidates who have pulled nomination papers for the upcoming November 5 election. This list will be updated daily (or as needed) listing the status of the candidates.
Following the randomized drawing conducted by the Secretary of State on August 15, 2024, the "Official List" of qualified candidates will be posted in the order they shall appear on the ballot.
